Candied Peanuts

Candied Peanuts
We got on the bus right after leaving our college classes. With no seats available and no room in the aisle, we had to hold onto the pole near the exit door. She stood in front of me, her hands beneath mine.
“Hey, how are you?”
“Alright.”
I had gone to public school with her during my senior year. She was better at math than most of our class. Whenever she spoke in front of everyone, she sounded older than the rest of us.
I hadn’t seen her in three years.
“I’m studying Mathematics. You?”
“Foreign Languages.”
As we left the terminal, the lights went out and the passengers’ voices faded into whispers. A three-hour ride standing up awaited us, clinging to the pole. Sometimes the hand beneath mine brushed against the one above.
Every time we passed through a town, the glow of roadside lamps lit up the bus. In those flashes, I would catch myself looking at her.
To break the silence, I pulled a bag of peanuts coated in yellow sugar from my shirt pocket.
I ate a couple. Then I picked up two and slipped them behind the hand she had wrapped around the pole. She let go and opened it, accepting my offer. She thanked me in a whisper.
I kept placing peanuts into her hand until the bag was nearly empty. Without thinking, I placed one hand over hers and the other between them around the pole.
Whenever the light returned through the window, I could see her smiling.
I took two peanuts and placed them in her mouth. I felt her soft lips gathering them from my fingers.
I placed one between my lips and leaned closer.
In the dimness, she took it.
One by one, we shared the rest of the bag. Sometimes she returned half of one to me, or pressed her candied lips against mine.
“That makes seven,” she said. “Lucky number.”
She counted even while kissing.
Between the light and darkness of the journey, she made numbers and I made declarations without saying a single word.
We were a g and b equation until graduation sent us down different roads.

Manis Endulzados

I was only sorry that the romance ended after graduation. Sounds like a delightfully low-maintenance female, subsisting off sugary peanuts and kisses.
Wilbert, the setup to this relationship was beautifully crafted. While I found the ending to be a splash of cold water, I did enjoy the read.
