PSL Meet Cute
By Kat Craig
“That’s mine,” I said and grabbed the iced pumpkin spice latte.
“No, sorry, I’m Avery,” he answered and took the cup from my hand.
“Well, Avery, I’m also Avery.” I tilted my head.
“You take this one. Ladies first. I’ll wait.” He handed me the frosty cup.
“Gross. Equality is a thing, Avery.” I gave the drink back.
“I didn’t mean anything by it.” He nodded. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
Another latte appeared with “Avery” scrawled on the side. I took it.
“Would you maybe like to split this cookie with me, Avery?” he offered, and I smiled my acceptance.

I don't usually make negative comments, but this is something I feel strongly about, and I always stand up for things I feel strongly. There's this whole debate about toxic masculinity, but why doesn't anyone talk about toxic feminism? I know it is only a drabble, but it still applies - if someone makes a kind gesture, why can't it be taken simply for what it is: someone who was brought up to have good manners and to put others before themself? This sort of response makes the world a meaner, less human place. As a woman, in that man's place, I would typically do exactly the same thing, no matter what gender/age/colour/etc the other same-name person was - it is the basic kind of decency and respect for others I was brought up with, and why is that wrong? I really do understand that it is just intended as a cute little whimsy, but it normalises the idea that making a thoughtful gesture is somehow offensive, and that offends me.
So cute, Katie! Writing microfiction is so difficult, but you managed to tell a cute little seasonal meet cute story in just a few words! Im rooting for the Averys! 💕
